Plate Boundaries

I live in New York and the region sits on what is referred to as the North American Plate. New York is famous around the world due to its manmade structures and this can be explained through studying its geologic features. The geology helps influence the landscape and schist cropping. This is because New York is positioned at the edge of a glacier on the North American plate. The tectonic plate covers most parts of North America, Bahamas, Cuba, and the northeastern areas of Asia. Most of the sediments that make up New York were metamorphosed during the Acadian and the Taconic orogenies. This is estimated to be around five hundred to four hundred million years ago. Some of the areas where garnets can be found on the rocks include the Manhattan Schist and the Hartland Formation (Plate Boundaries).

The hard rocks in the plate act as the foundation within which the skyscrapers of the city are established. It is for this reason that New York City is associated with high towers and buildings due to the ability of the sediments to withstand huge and enormous constructions. During the Ice Age about two million to eight thousand years ago, large ice sheets were all over the landscape. The Ice Age here refers to the Pleistocene epoch and rocks in the glaciers scratched and scraped the bedrock of the area thereby producing straight grooves and striations (Jones, 69). Today, Long Island in New York is a testament to the rubble that was left behind once the ice melted. Within the plate, there are crusts that hold the mantle to the Earth. These are rigid plates that are known as tectonic plates.

Whenever there are joints between the plates, the region tends to be associated with earthquakes due to the movement especially when they grind against each other. In New York, the nearest tectonic plate is thousands of miles away and this is the reason why any movement between the plates may tend to have very minimal effect on the surface in terms of earthquakes. The closest boundary in the plate is in the Atlantic where there are many earthquakes (Green, 33). However, despite the intra-plate distance between New York and the boundary, there are also numerous tremors that are quite small. Most of the tremors are so slight that it is difficult to be felt by people in New York

Motion of the plate is also another important aspect that needs to be discussed when looking at the geologic location. For most part of the North American Plate, movement is roughly towards the southwest direction such that it moves from the main Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is also important to note that movement of motion of the plate cannot be as a result of subduction since there is no part of the plate that is under subduction. However, there is a small part where movement is common and this is in the Puerto Rico Trench that is not in the United States. The trench is a complex transition in the subduction zone and this at times leads to earthquakes as was recently seen in Haiti. It is for this reason that an earthquake and other catastrophes relating to movement of the plates are rare in New York. Understanding the geologic state of the area one lives is an important aspect towards explaining the various attributes and traits that are observable in the region.
