Statement of purpose
Until today, most of IT innovation has come from S/W. From now on, new IT innovation seems to come from H/W combined with S/W to make physical automation. Especially, H/W with vision technology will drive next future. Autonomous vehicles, vision inspection machines are typical example of that. I majored Statistics and industrial engineering, and I have worked IT consultant or manager about seven years. My work experience has cultivated the power of establishing hypotheses and solving the problem. In addition, it is suitable for the convergence of IT, AI, Robotics that my academic trait who loves to learn and apply various new thigs. As an person who pursues an innovator and engineer apply Computer Sciences at Purdue University to prepare in a new era.
The biggest moment that I decided to start my second career as an engineer or researcher is that I participated in a small new business invention contest with my cousins. We suggested Smart-mat with simple prototype. Smart-mat is a home training device that count the actual number of workouts of user by using a mat and bracelets while user following the exercise video on the mobile app. The cost of making full-set of H/W was too expensive. So, I made a semi-prototype of a limited function of smart-mat only for count number of push-ups. Even the circuit was finished by the outsourcing company, I made simple prototype, that push-up counting functions using Arduino-piezo sensor’s pressure change, by myself. The combination of HW and IT is not difficult than I thought, I excited that shape my idea and make new things as an engineer.
I served as an IT manager in the manufacturing quality area for 6 years. The know-how that comes from reviewing many new technologies and building many systems is my lifelong asset and source of confidence. These were my main projects. I built a Defect Prevention System by customizing a Machine Learning algorithm’s smart-pen and gathering the machines (PLC) data to prevent defective parts from being passed on to the next stage in the manufacturing process. I built a Parts Traceability System to enhance end-customers safety from recall. To gather the serial numbers of about two hundred main parts, we had to standardize an assembly work process to get the number and interfaced master data from the other assembly drawing system (Product Lifecycle Management system). Some successful projects have been rolled out globally in 32 global plants, and some systems which were failures have been discarded. Through building and executing many of my own hypotheses, I was able to accumulate knowledge and enhance my understanding of digital transformation.
In the area of AI, algorithms seem to be the key. The success of machine learning projects always been key to increasing the speed and accuracy of the algorithm through various methods, such as edge/cloud computing or customizing the algorithm. There is a gap between data science(Statistics) and programming(Computer Science), and there are not many people who are good at both. Through Purdue’s Master of Computer Science, I want to be a person who can design from product architecture to the core algorithm. I definitely want to start that from studying at Purdue University.
