Technology’s Influence on Society and How Best to Manage It
During this lecture we will be discussing technology’s influence on society and how organizations can best manage it.
Let’s begin with talking about technology’s influence on society. Technological innovations have changed the way we live, as well as the way society views the world around it. These innovations make our lives more comfortable and provide opportunities for people around the world they might not have ever had. We live in a time where our society is immensely impacted by technological innovations. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of new innovations be it products, services, or research being introduced to us on a continuous basis. Most people, me included, can’t imagine life without technological innovations such as the Internet, cell phones or electricity. The other side of the coin is that for every pro there is also a con. One of the biggest downsides of technology’s influence on society is that it is believed that while it has indeed made our lives easier, it has also made us lazy and dependent on technology.
As long as there have been human being on this planet, there has been technology in some way, shape, or form. Whether it was the cavemen carving and shaping rocks to use as wheels or creating the first personal computer, technology has driven the evolution of our species and our civilization. According to Brian Arthur in his latest book, The Nature of Technology, “More than anything else technology creates our world. It creates our wealth, our economy, our very way of being,” Think about this for just a minute. Wouldn’t you agree? When discussing technology, it often difficult to separate it from society as a whole. Technology allows human beings to look at the world differently and to see beyond what is, in a matter of speaking, to what could be. This ability has allowed us to create innovative solutions and technologies that have helped our society flourish through the generations and well beyond what we ever thought was imaginable. It’s important to understand that when we are first developing and exploring concepts, we need to be creative but yet keep in mind what is reasonable to create. It is this exciting combination of creativity and reason that encourages us to learn from our past mistakes, push boundaries that we did not think were possible, and dream future possibilities.
I’d like to now shift gears and discuss the framework for the strategic management of technology issues.
Today’s technological advances can cause major challenges for organizations. Due to the integral role technology plays in today’s competitive business environment, an organization’s ability to strategically manage this technology is of the utmost importance for their long-term success.
Technological innovations have become an important part in the successful and efficient daily operations of many of today’s corporations; however, it is very difficult for them to integrate these innovations into the organization’s strategic management process. The difficulty arises often times due to organization’s being put into the uncomfortable position of having to rethink their strategy. While technology is different from company to company, strategically managing its integration into every day practice can pose complex problems for organizations around the globe.
From a practical standpoint, organizations should consider establishing and maintaining a Strategic Technology Management Team within their current IT Department. Organizations should also consider redefining their current technological goals and objectives to include strategic technology management. In other words, strategic technology management activities should now coexist with the overall vision, goals, and strategy of the organization. The goal of this would be to intertwine technology and business issues into a single cohesive unit that would be within the scope of the organization’s overall strategic management plan. Most organization’s strategic management activities usually are confined to business and product aspects of the organization, whereas now incorporating strategic technology management with the organization’s overall strategic plan would help them remain proactive.
